Vegetarian and vegan diets can be planned in different ways. Nutritional adequacy depends on the foods actually eaten, the person’s needs and any relevant fortified foods or supplements.
What nutrition support includes
- Review the foods included in your eating pattern.
- Plan dependable vitamin B12 sources for vegan diets.
- Consider protein, iron, calcium, iodine and other nutrients in the context of the whole diet.
- Find realistic meal ideas and discuss any tests or supplements with an appropriate clinician.
Lacto-ovo vegetarian diets include eggs and dairy. Vegan diets exclude animal products, including honey. Pescatarian and flexitarian patterns include some animal foods. These labels do not establish whether an individual has a deficiency.
